Removing your oil tank after switching to a heat pump
Heat pump conversions are leaving thousands of unused oil tanks in Atlantic basements and yards. An empty-looking tank is rarely empty, and it is still a liability until it is gone.
Why remove it
Sludge and some oil stay in the bottom of the tank, and a tank that is no longer checked can keep corroding. Insurers and home buyers often want an unused tank removed, and an abandoned fill pipe can lead to a delivery into a tank nobody is watching.
What removal includes
- Pumping out the remaining oil and sludge.
- Disconnecting and capping the supply line at the furnace or boiler.
- Cleaning and removing the tank for proper disposal.
- Sealing and labelling, or removing, the outside fill and vent pipes.
- A removal record you can give your insurer or a buyer.
Nova Scotia's fuel safety guidance says old tanks, oil and sludge must be disposed of properly and abandoned fill and vent pipes sealed and labelled or removed.

FAQ
Common questions
I switched to a heat pump. Do I have to remove the old tank?
An unused tank still holds sludge and can still leak, and many insurers and home buyers want it gone. Removal means pumping out the remaining oil and sludge, cleaning, taking the tank away, and sealing or removing the old fill and vent pipes.
Can I keep oil as backup heat with a heat pump?
Yes, many Atlantic homes keep the oil furnace as backup for the coldest days. In that case the tank stays and still needs yearly checks and an insurer-acceptable age. If you are removing oil entirely, plan the tank removal at the same time as the heat pump install.
